VFW Post 3167 spreads anti-drug message to local third, fourth graders

Williamsburg’s VFW Post 3167 is trying to do its part to educate children on the dangers of drugs.

VFW Post Commander Larry Lewis hands out coloring books to students at Boston Elementary School recently that feature an anti-drug message.

Post Commander Larry Lewis and Service Officer Joe Grillon delivered “Be Smart, Say No To Drugs” coloring books to 429 third and fourth graders at Pleasant View Elementary School, Williamsburg Independent School and Whitley Central Primary School on Oct. 27.

“We have to do community service work every year and this we felt was a good project for that,” Grillon said.

Grillon said that this year was the first year the post has given out the coloring books.

“This year Joe brought up the ‘Be Smart, Say No To Drugs’ coloring books when he was looking through his catalog and we voted on it and decided to bring it out to the kids this year,” Lewis added.

Pleasant View Principal Bobby Gibbs said that the timing of the VFW visit and donation worked out well for his school, which was conducting Red Ribbon Week, which involves a pledge to be drug free.
“We were excited to have the VFW out. Anything we can do to continue to enforce the idea to our kids that a drug free life is a good life, then we want to do that,” Gibbs noted.

“We want our kids to be aware of the decision that they make. We want them to make positive choices and to know about the negative aspects of drugs. It is all about raising awareness to being drug free.”
