State police, commercial vehicle enforcement hosting ‘Cram the Cruiser’ food drive

Kentucky State Police has begun its annual, “Cram The Cruiser’ holiday food drive.

Through Dec. 10, residents are asked to bring non-perishable food items to one of the 16 state police posts or six Commercial Vehicle Enforcement region offices across the Commonwealth.

Locally, the state police operate Post 11 in London and Post 10 in Harlan. Vehicle enforcement operates the facility on Interstate 75 near the 33-mile marker.

“Hunger is an urban, suburban and rural problem,” said Sgt. Josh Lawson, spokesman for the state police in Frankfort.

Suggested donations include non-expired canned fruit and vegetables, canned meat, macaroni and cheese, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, canned soups, chili or spaghetti sauce, brownie and cake mixes, coffee, water, powdered milk and juices.

Donations will be passed on to area food banks, shelters, churches and other organizations in the areas in which they were given.

State Police have partnered with Kroger and Pepsi for a special collection event on Saturday.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. select Kroger locations, including the store on Cumberland Falls Hwy. in Corbin, will be accepting donations.

In 2017, KSP and CVE collected 419,507 pounds of food during the “Cram The Cruiser” event.

“Feeding our neighbors is a noble cause, but it takes a team effort. Together we can take a stand against hunger and help make the holidays bright for families in need this year,” Lawson said.
