Corbin Public Library approves contract with Whitley Co. Public Library

After reviewing it with its attorney, the Corbin Public Library Board approved a contract Friday night with the Whitley County Public Library Board detailing the division of county library tax revenue between the two entities.

Under the original one-page agreement drafted in 1962, the Whitley County Library Board agreed to give 25 percent of the revenue collected through the newly enacted library tax to the Corbin Public Library.

The Whitley County Library Board agreed in December to suspend disbursements of Corbin’s portions of the funding after complaints by Corbin Library employees that the Corbin board had violated open meetings laws and open records law.

In January, the Whitley County Library Board approved the new contract. In addition to detailing how the revenue will be divided, Whitley Library Director Greg Meadors said the contract calls for the Corbin Public Library Board to adhere to open meetings law and keep meeting minutes as required by law as a stipulation to receiving the library tax revenue.

The Corbin Library Board approved the contract with a few revisions.

Though details of the revisions were not provided, as the contract has not been finalized, Board Chair Brenda Jones said they were nothing significant from the proposed contracts provided by the Whitley County board.

Notice was sent out Tuesday that the Corbin Library Board will hold a special called meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Among the items to be discussed is the new revision of the contract.

The Whitley County Library Board is scheduled to meet Thursday.

Since it is the board’s regular monthly meeting, the contract may be brought up for discussion and a vote even if it is not listed on the agenda.
