Corbin man leads state police on high-speed chase through Laurel County

Kentucky State Police say a Corbin man who led police on a high-speed chase Saturday night was driving the stolen car while under the influence of intoxicants.

David Hutton, 24, is facing multiple charges including theft by unlawful taking of the value of $10,000 or more but under $1 million – auto, first-degree fleeing or evading police, speeding – 26 mph or greater over the limit, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs – second offense, reckless driving, improperly passing on the left side of the road, disregarding a traffic control device, failure to or improper signal, operating a motor vehicle on a suspended/revoked operator’s license, and resisting arrest.

The chase began just after 7 p.m., when a call came into Laurel County 9-1-1 concerning a stolen Dodge Ram pickup truck that was reportedly northbound on Interstate 75.

Trooper Shawn Boroviak located the truck in London as it exited the interstate off of Exit 41 in London.

“Above (Hutton) nearly wrecked getting off of the interstate and did not stop at the red turning light,” Boroviak wrote in the arrest citation.

Boroviak stated that he fell in behind the truck and activated his blue lights in an attempt to make a traffic stop. However, Hutton accelerated.

“Above (Hutton) traveled (south) on Main St. narrowly avoiding collisions with numerous motorists and disregarding numerous traffic control devices,” Boroviak wrote noting the pursuit continued onto Barbourville Street, and then south on Ky. 229, reaching speeds of 90 mph. The chase continued onto Old State Road, Hopkins Cemetery Road and then onto Ky. 1223.

The chase ended near Barron Road. However, Boroviak stated that Hutton continued to fight with police before he was taken into custody.

“Above (Hutton) displayed slurred speech and was extremely unsteady on his feet,” Boroviak wrote adding that Hutton admitted to using methamphetamine and smoking marijuana earlier in the day.

Hutton was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Facility where he is being held on a $50,000 cash bond.

Hutton has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to return to Laurel District Court at 11 a.m. Tuesday for a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is probable cause to present the case to the grand jury.
