28th Annual Laurel Lake Cleanup scheduled for Saturday at the spillway
These volunteers helped pull trash from Laurel Lake during last year’s clean-up that was held in April.
Spring thunderstorms have delayed the event, but the annual Laurel Lake Cleanup is going to finally happen Saturday.
The 28th annual event pits Laurel and Whitley counties against each other in an effort to turn out the most volunteers.
Laurel County currently holds the trophy.
The event is typically scheduled for early April. However, lightening in the area on that day forced the cancellation.
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the spillway beach with the cleanup kicking off at 9 a.m.
The event will wrap up at noon with a cookout for the volunteers.
In addition, an award will be given for the “Catch of the Day,” which is the most unique piece of trash found during the cleanup.
Items submitted in the past have included: A color television set, a mannequin torso that was used for target practice, a 5 gallon water seal can and the remains of a Barbie Doll with sticks and other lake debris where her hair should be, a potted plant and the remains of a bowling ball.
Drawings will be held for a variety of door prizes including tickets to Kentucky Splash Water Park.
While most of the Laurel Lake shoreline is only accessible by boat, organizers said there are areas that may be reached by road for those who don’t want to go by boat.
Gloves and trash bags will be provided.
Boat owners who would like to volunteer their boats to the cleanup are welcome and encouraged.
The spillway is located off of Robert E. Blair Hwy. and is accessible through either Laurel or Whitley County.
