Williamsburg Mayor proclaims Sept. 17-23 Constitution Week in Whitley County

The William Whitley Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution met with Mayor Roddy Harrison at Williamsburg City Hall for the signing of a proclamation proclaiming September 17-23 as Constitution Week in the city of Williamsburg and Whitley County.

On September 17, 1787, 39 delegates from 12 states signed this historic document which is now the oldest document still in active use that outlines the self-government of a people.

The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was begun in 1955 when the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. Tuesday, September 17 is Citizenship Day.

The resolution was adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915 on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

By commemorating this important event, the William Whitley Chapter of the NSDAR urges all the citizens of the Whitley County area to take time to read the Constitution in your homes, churches and schools to honor the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American independence.
