Whitley deputies seeking public’s help to identify suspect who passed counterfeit $100 bills

Whitley County Sheriff’s deputies have a suspect in the case of the counterfeit $100 bills that were successfully passed at two area businesses and are asking for the public’s help to identify her.

Stills from surveillance video at the Dollar General Store off of Fifth Street in Corbin and on U.S. 25W in Goldbug on October 12 shows the same blonde woman approaching the counter.

Sheriff Colan Harrell said at both locations, the suspect purchased gift cards and a other assorted items.

Harrell said the woman was identified as the suspect through the course of the investigation that included reviewing the surveillance video and comparing it with the register receipts, and interviews with the store clerks.

“We couldn’t tell if anyone was with her,” Harrell said adding that deputies have found nothing to indicate what type of vehicle she is using.

Harrell said the investigation into who may have passed the fifth counterfeit bill by including it as part of a property tax payment at the sheriff’s office is continuing.

“The lesson to be learned it that the pens designed to detect counterfeit pens are not 100-percent accurate,” Harrell said noting all of the counterfeits passed that test.

“We have taken it a step further at the sheriff’s office with a new instrument that will detect counterfeit bills.”
