Whitley County senior awarded $1,000 scholarship, plans to pursue degree in Agriculture

For a number of years the Whitley County Cattlemen’s Association has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a Whitley County senior with plans to pursue a degree in Agriculture.

This year’s recipient is Alex Sutton, daughter of Teddy and Vena Sutton, and a Whitley County High School senior who plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University majoring in Ag Education or Ag Business.

Among her achievements Alex can list a GPA of 4.0; 2016-17 President and 2015-16 Secretary of the Whitley County High School Future Farmers of America chapter, Treasurer of KY River FFA Region, and membership in the Colonel Strings, a group of students who play mostly bluegrass country and gospel music.

In addition, according to the FFA Banquet Program, Alex was recognized as winner of the “nail driving” and “seed spitting” competition in their annual redneck games!

When asked to describe Alex’s character and abilities, Glenn Croley, Ag Instructor and FFA Advisor at WCHS said, “She is flawless! She always strives to do her best and is one of the most outstanding students I have had. Not only has she been an excellent student, she is a really good person. It has been a pleasure to have her in my classes.”

The Whitley County Cattlemen’s Association is pleased to recognize the academic achievement and leadership qualities of Alex by awarding her our 2017 scholarship as well as a four-year membership in the association.

Further, the association counts it a privilege to be able to contribute to her career goals and pledge to monitor and applaud her progress in the field of agriculture.
