The Whitley County Middle School’s sixth grade girl’s basketball team is being recognized for becoming 2017 state champions.
During its November meeting Thursday afternoon, the Whitley County Board of Education approved an agreement with the Kentucky Department of Transportation to place a highway marker on US25W commemorating the team’s accomplishment.
“I think it is great,” noted school board chairman Larry Lambdin.
The $700 cost for the sign will be split evenly between the board of education and the girl’s basketball boosters.
In other business, the board of education:
- Presented the November Above and Beyond Award to Dee Dee Bishop, a school nurse at the high school and health coordinator over all Whitley County school nurses. Whitley County High School Principal Bob Lawson nominated her for the award.
- Approved sign language interpreter contracts. Whitley County Superintendent Scott Paul noted that in past years, the district had people certified in sign language, but that is not the case this school year.
- Approved school meal prices for employees and non-employees. Breakfast prices will go from $1.50 to $2.35 and lunch prices from $3 to $3.55 for adult employees. Breakfast prices for non-employee adults goes from $1.85 to $2.60, and lunch prices go from $3.25 to $3.80. The new rates take effect Jan. 1.
- Announced that board member Brenda Hill was absent from Thursday’s meeting due to a medical issue. “We are all remembering Brenda in our thoughts and prayers,” Lambdin noted.
