Whitley Co, Lynn Camp win district softball titles Thursday
Both the 50th and 51st District softball tournaments wrapped up Thursday, and two coverage area teams were able to walk away as champions.
The Whitley County Lady Colonels faced the Corbin Lady Hounds in the finals of the 50th District tournament at Briar Creek Park in Williamsburg. At the end of one inning the game was tied at one run apiece, but a three-run bottom of the second inning for the Lady Colonels was followed by a two-run bottom of the third, lifting Whitley to a 6-1 district championship win.
After the game, Lady Colonels head coach Angela Singleton said that she was very proud of her team for this accomplishment, and she is looking forward to seeing what they can do when they host this year’s 13th Region tournament next week.
In the district title game, senior Lindsey Shope pitched all seven innings for Whitley County, striking out five Corbin batters. Teammate Hannah Rains led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Lady Hounds’ one run of the evening came courtesy of an RBI double from Sarah Stewart that brought home Whitney Trosper.
In the finals of the 51st District tournament at Lynn Camp High School Thursday, the host Lady Cats shutout Knox Central 6-0, avenging a 15-0 loss to the Lady Panthers in the championship game of last year’s district tourney.
Lynn Camp (25-11), Whitley County (16-16), Corbin (11-12) and Knox Central (12-12) will all advance to this year’s 13th Region tournament, which is scheduled to kick off Monday at Whitley County High School.
