Dates and times announced for upcoming regional, state competitions
Next week coverage area athletes will compete for regional baseball and softball championships, as well as state track and tennis titles.
The 2019 13th Region baseball tournament will kickoff Monday, May 27 at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. The Corbin Redhounds will face Bell County in game one at 11:00 am. Knox Central vs. Clay County will come next, followed by Middlesboro vs. Barbourville and North Laurel vs. Whitley County in the night game. Semifinal round games will be at 5:30 and 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28, and the championship game will be played Wednesday, May 29 at 7:00 pm.
The 2019 13th Region softball tournament will also begin Monday, May 27 at Whitley County High School. The Whitley County Lady Colonels will face Middlesboro in game one at 11:00 am. Lynn Camp vs. North Laurel will come next, followed by Clay County vs. Corbin and Harlan County vs. Knox Central in the late game. Semifinal round games will be at 6:00 and 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28, and the championship game will be played Wednesday, May 29 at 7:00 pm.
Regional baseball and softball champions will advance to play in semi-state contests next Saturday, June 1.
The 2019 KHSAA state championship tennis tournaments are set to begin next Thursday, May 30. Corbin’s Camille Overley will play in the first round of the girls singles tournament at 9:15 am that morning at the Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville. Fellow Lady Hound Samantha Spady is scheduled to compete at the same time, also at Top Seed.
In the girls doubles bracket, Corbin’s Rachel Morton and Katherine Niemeier will play their opening round match at 11:30 am Thursday morning at Top Seed. Teammates Nancy Jane Jackson and Hannah Jones will play at 12:45 pm, while Whitley County’s Grace Barton and Victoria Johnson will play at 11:30 am.
Corbin’s Grant Morton will be in action early next Thursday morning, playing at 8:00 am at the University of Kentucky’s Boone-Downing tennis complex. Fellow Redhound Camden Harris and Whitley County Colonel Reece Halcomb are both set to take the court at UK at 9:15 am Thursday.
Finally, in the boys doubles bracket, Whitley County’s Jared Hunter and Jordan Richardson will play at UK at 10:30 am next Thursday. Corbin’s Peyton Hamlin and Quinn Maguet are scheduled to go on at the same time, while Redhounds Drew Beecham and Will Childers will play at 11:45 am.
Second round matches will take place later in the day Thursday at both Top Seed and Boone-Downing. Everyone advancing to the round of 16 on Friday will play at UK. Championship matches are scheduled to take place Saturday, June 1.
