Two people airlifted from scene of Woodbine wreck

Two people are in stable condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center where they were airlifted following a two-vehicle crash in Woodbine Wednesday.

Whitley County Sheriff’s deputies identified the individuals as 47-year-old Samuel Crabtree of Louisville and 48-year-old Victoria E. Carter of Rockholds, who were driving a 1997 Ford Escort and a 2010 Dodge Caliber, respectively.

Officials at UT said Thursday that Crabtree and Carter are both listed in stable condition.

Witnesses reportedly told deputies that Crabtree, who was travelling west on Ky. 6, failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection with Ky. 26, pulling into the path of Carter’s Caliber.

Upon impact, Carter’s vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

Woodbine and Corbin firefighters worked to extricate Crabtree and Carter from their vehicles.

Dispatchers reported that Woodbine firefighters were called to the scene. Corbin firefighters were en route back to the station from lunch at a nearby barbecue shack when they came upon the wreck and offered their assistance.

Corbin Fire Chief Barry McDonald explained previously that when the firefighters on duty leave the station for a meal, to get groceries or supplies for the station, or routine duties, they take one of the trucks in the event that they are paged out.

The passenger in the Escort, 41-year-old Christine Crabtree, was taken by ambulance to Baptist Health Corbin.
