Program provided Christmas for 240 children in 23rd year
Laurel County Sheriff John Root reports that he along with 30 Laurel Sheriff’s supervisors, deputies, bailiffs, court security officers and even the sheriff’s office K-9 “Edge” all had the privilege to help with Laurel County’s “Shop with a Cop” program on Saturday morning December 8, 2018 at 7 a.m. at Walmart in London.
This year’s event reached a record 240 Laurel County children and is an annual event funded solely by donations from area businesses, groups, individuals and fund raisers. This event originated as the Cumberland Valley Fraternal Order of Police Lodge # 28.
Presently the program is the Cumberland Valley Fraternal Order of Police Shop with a Cop and is in its 23rd year providing a Christmas for children from all over Laurel County.
The children spend $100 per child with $70 of it being spent on clothing and $30 on toys.
Some of the early founding fathers are still active with the present-day program including Virginia Wattenbarger and Laurel County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Chris Edwards.
Don Wattenbarger, also a founding father, passed away this past year, but leaves a successful program in trusting hands as the program reached more children this year than ever before.
A new logo was adopted this year with his shilhouette in it along with shoulder patches of Laurel County Sheriff’s Office and London City Police.
Also assisting on today’s event was: Jamie Harrison – representative of Shop with a Cop, all Shop with a Cop board members, Chief Terry Wattenbarger and Laurel County Volunteer Fire Department,
Chief Derek House and London City Police, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, Laurel 911 dispatchers, individual volunteers from Connect Missional Church, Forcht Bank staff, One Main Financial staff, all county school family resource personnel, North Laurel High School Girls softball team, and countless other volunteers.
Laurel County Sheriff John Root expressed his thoughts: “Thanks again to our donors and volunteers, and everyone for making this such a successful and blessed event today!”
