Sheriff: Shoplifting suspect who fought with deputies was reaching for knife
The black Friday discounts at Corbin Walmart weren’t enough for a Clover Port man, whom Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies reported finding with $55 worth of unpaid merchandise and a knife Thursday night.
According to Sheriff John Root, deputies were called to the store about 6 p.m. after Walmart loss prevention reported seeing 33-year-old Darrell Wilson concealing merchandise and attempting to leave the store.
Root stated that Sgt. Larry Parrott, Lt. Greg Poynter, Sgt. Brett Reeves, Detective Kevin Berry and Deputy Kyle Gray, attempted to stop Wilson and a second individual, later identified as 34-year-old James Sheets of Louisville.
While Sheets was taken into custody without incident, Wilson attempted to run away and continued to fight and struggle with deputies after they chased him down and were attempting to secure him in handcuffs.
Deputies reported finding the merchandise stuffed in Wilson’s pockets.
Root said along with the unspecified merchandise, deputies reported finding a knife under Wilson’s Jacket that he had apparently been reaching for during the struggle.
Wilson was charged with theft by unlawful taking – shoplifting, second-degree fleeing or evading police – on foot, resisting arrest, second-degree disorderly conduct, public intoxication – controlled substances, giving officer a false name or address, and third-degree criminal mischief.
Root stated that Wilson admitted to using methamphetamine earlier that day.
Sheets was charged with theft by unlawful taking – shoplifting.
Both were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
