Rev. Fred Powers
Rev. Fred Powers, 65, of Williamsburg, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond.
He was born May 30, 1951 in Jellico, TN, to TJ Powers and the late Veda Teague Powers.
He was ordained as a pastor in December 1984 at Watson’s Chapel where he also served as pastor.
He was a member of Williamsburg Masonic Lodge #490 and commissioned a Kentucky Colonel. Fred was a founding member of the gospel group The Heavenly Heirs. Following the Holy Spirit and the vision of a church in his childhood neighborhood, he founded Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in August of 1992 where he continued to pastor until his passing.
Along with his mother he was preceded in death by grandparents, Jimmy Powers, Laura Bird Powers, Judson Finley Teague, and Nancy Isabell Teague.
He is survived by his wife Patty Powers, a son Rob Powers and wife Tammy, two grandsons, Dawson Powers and Mason Powers, special son, Mike Lawson and wife Lisa, special grandson Curtis Lawson and wife Jenna, special great grandson, Asher Lawson, his father, TJ Powers and wife Janice, two brothers, Ronnie Powers, Rick Powers and wife Rose, two sisters Melissa Hamblin and husband Bill, Teresa Campbell, lifelong special family member and friend and the only congregational pianist in his ministry, June Paul, and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday October 26, at the church where he will lie in state until the funeral the next morning.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday October 27, at the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. James Hodge and Rev. Rob Powers officiating.
Following the service he will be laid to rest in the Ellison Addition of the Highland Park Cemetery.
