Update: One killed, one airlifted in truck collision on Corbin bypass

Update: The identities of a Cumberland Valley Electric truck driver, who was killed, and a UPS tractor trailer driver, who was airlifted from the scene after their trucks collided on the Corbin bypass (Highway 3041) Wednesday morning, have been released.

Firefighters and emergency personnel were paged to the scene approximately one mile west of Ky. 26 at approximately 8:45 a.m.

The UPS truck was a semi hauling two trailers. The Cumberland Valley Electric vehicle was hauling multiple utility poles.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Craig Sutton, who is investigating the crash, determined that a 2016 Kenworth UPS commercial vehicle operated by Larry W. Lyle, 57, of Lexington, was traveling eastbound when he was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet 7500 Cumberland Valley Electric commercial vehicle traveling westbound, which was operated by Mitchell T. Shelton, 40, of Williamsburg, according to a police.

Shelton, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Whitley County Coroner’s Office.

Lyle was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. Corbin firefighters extricated him from his truck. A PHi Air Medical helicopter landed at the scene, and flew him to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Officials at UK said Thursday that Lyle remains at the hospital. An update on his condition was not available.

Police said there were no witnesses to the crash.

Sutton is continuing the investigation. He was assisted at the scene by troopers from Post 11, Kentucky State Police Traffic Crash Reconstructionist Trooper David Hobbs, Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Corbin Fire Department, Whitley County EMS and Whitley County Coroner’s Office.
