Myers speaks at Kiwanis prayer breakfast

“Today we recognize the National Day of Prayer and we gather here,” Rev. Ande Myers told a group of about 100 people gathered Thursday morning for the 17th Annual Williamsburg Kiwanis Club National Day of Prayer Breakfast. “As we think about our nation and our needs and our world and her needs, we recognize that prayer and God’s guidance and assistance is so necessary in our lives and our world.”

Myers noted that one thing we can’t do is compel people to pray.

“You know what we can do? We can develop that look of longing in our own lives. We can lift up our neighbors. We can pray for those needs we know about. We can pray for the situations we rub shoulders with or are around. We can pray for our sister churches,” Myers noted.

“We can pray for those, who are suffering and hurting. We can grow through out prayer and obedience to God. We can grow in our faithfulness in following Him and our reliance on Him every single day.”

Myers was the keynote speaker Thursday for prayer breakfast, which was held at the Williamsburg Tourism and Convention Center.

Dave Bergman, the event chairperson, noted that in 1953 Congress set the first Thursday in May as a day to observe prayer.

Bergman added that the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club has donated money in recent years towards playground equipment at Briar Creek Park and City Park in addition to the Williamsburg Skate Park.

“The youth of our area have a clean, safe place to play but also to meet each other – both the children and the parents,” Bergman said.

Thursday’s event raised about $2,000 for the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club. The proceeds go to support area children through projects and scholarships.

“I appreciate all of you coming out to support the children of Williamsburg,” Williamsburg Kiwanis Club President Alvin Sharpe said during the event. “Understand this is for the youth of Williamsburg.”

Prayer breakfast sponsors included: Huddle House of Williamsburg, Top Choice Custom Meats, FCI Federal, Forcht Bank, Community Trust Bank, Firestone Industrial, South Kentucky Truck Service and Kiwanis International.

Kiwanis Clubs across the globe sponsor nearly 150,000 service projects and raise nearly $107 million every year.

Williamsburg’s Main Street Baptist Church Pastor Bill Wright was announced as the speaker for next year’s prayer breakfast.
