Melvin Chandler Sr.
Melvin Patton Chandler, Sr., 76, of Corbin, passed away Friday, September 16, 2016.
He was born on August 24, 1940 in Corbin.
Melvin graduated from Corbin High School, where he earned All-American honors and a scholarship to play football for the University of Kentucky. He graduated from UK with a degree in Biology and Education in 1962. He earned his Masters and Rank 1 from EKU.
After graduation, he became a teacher and assistant coach at Middlesboro and Corbin High Schools before taking a Head Coaching position at Williamsburg High School. He moved on to Richmond Madison High as a Title 1 Coordinator and Head Coach. He became a full-time administrator at Shelbyville High as Principal and finished his educational career as Assistant Superintendent at Shelby County Board of Education.
Melvin left education in 1976 to begin a career in the construction business and various other business developments including Ken-Tenn Coating Company, Inc., and Mel Chandler Contracting, Inc.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Chandler and Mable Hammons Chandler.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Thompson Chandler; son, Mel (Jane) Chandler, Jr., of Corbin; brother, David (Phyllis) Chandler of Florence; sister, Betty (Lloyd) Callahan of Corbin; grandson, Garner Alan Chandler; granddaughter, Patton Erin Chandler, as well as many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 24, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Corbin, with Rev. John Jervis and Rev. Austin Carty officiating.
Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m.
