Laurel deputies investigating shooting in north Corbin

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for a male subject who reportedly shot a man at a north Corbin residence Sunday night.

According to Sheriff John Root, deputies were called to the residence on Adams Road about 5:15 p.m. in response to a complaint of a home invasion during which shots had been fired.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered a male subject, later identified as 32-year-old Charles Rogers of Corbin, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said Rogers was struck at least twice in the chest.

“We haven’t recovered a weapon yet,” Acciardo said when asked if he knew what type of weapon the shooter used.

Rogers was taken by ambulance to Baptist Health Corbin and later transferred by ambulance to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington for treatment of what deputies described as “life threatening injuries.”

Upon further investigation, Acciardo said deputies concluded there was no home invasion.

Instead, deputies say Rogers and the shooter were at the residence when an argument occurred that eventually sparked the shooting.

However, Acciardo said deputies don’t know the motive for the shooting.

“We are attempting to locate a person of interest that we believe could be the shooter,” Acciardo said when asked if deputies have a suspect. “We haven’t verified or confirmed his identity yet.”

Acciardo said the shooter is not considered a danger to the public.

As part of the investigation, deputies went to a nearby residence in an effort to find the individual who owned the residence where the shooting occurred and arrested three people on unrelated charges.

Acciardo said deputies found multiple individuals at the residence, including the property owner, identified as Sarah Mills.

“Three males were found hiding in a bedroom there,” Acciardo said noting they each had outstanding warrants.

In addition, Acciardo said there were five children at the residence with a male subject who was not supposed to be there per a prevention plan by social services.

Acciardo said one male subject admitted to smoking methamphetamine at the residence while the children were there.

Forty-two-year-old Patty Gregory was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment.

Thirty-two-year-old Donnie Wisner of Corbin was charged with possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and first-degree wanton endangerment.

Acciardo said deputies recovered a pipe with meth residue inside it in Wisner’s possession.

Wisner was also served with a bench warrant charging him with failing to appear in Laurel County court on traffic charges.

Twenty-one-year-old Kylen Lovett of Corbin was served with a Laurel County bench warrant for failure to appear in court on shoplifting charges, and a Knox County bench warrant for failure to appear in court on numerous traffic violations.

In addition, Lovett was charged with multiple Whitley County bench warrants for failure to appear in court on charges of driving on a DUI suspended license, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, first-degree possession of a controlled substance, and numerous traffic violations.

Twenty-three-year-old John Messer of London was charged with second-degree disorderly conduct.

All were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.

Deputies Kevin Berry and Kyle Gray are continuing the investigation into the shooting.

They were assisted at the scene by Deputies Travis Napier, Cody Faulconer and Gary Mehler.
