Laurel deputies arrest two burglary suspects, seeking a third
One burglary suspect remains at large, while two were charged Wednesday after Sergeant Brett Reeves attempted to apprehend suspects in a burglary that occurred earlier that morning.
According to a release from Sheriff John Root, Sgt. Reeves investigated the burglary that occurred off O and W Lane, approximately two miles south of London, and learned that a male subject lured the victim outside of her residence to ask about a property located behind her home. Upon the distraction of the victim, a second male subject entered her residence, taking a purse containing an undisclosed amount of money, car keys, and several other personal items.
Deputy Craig Sutton assisted Sgt. Reeves when information developed later that afternoon that a possible suspect was located off Glenview Road, approximately two miles north of London.
Upon conducting investigation, Deputy Sutton and Sgt. Reeves located Andrew Burkhart, 67, of Blossom Ridge Rd, Corbin.
Burkhart was charged with second-degree burglary, second-degree hindering prosecution or apprehension, and public intoxication (controlled substance).
“This subject knowingly gave investigating deputies incorrect information in order to delay apprehension of the other male subject involved in the earlier burglary on O and W Lane,” said the release.
Deputies also interviewed 42-year-old Crystal Wilt, who is believed to be the wife of the second subject, who was located on nearby Helvetia Road. Wilt advised that she did not know the whereabouts of her husband.
The release said that when Wilt called her husband, she informed him that deputies were there, subsequently allowing her husband to escape. A search was conducted in that area to locate Wilt’s husband, however he was not found.
During their investigation, deputies reported that, “this subject [Wilt] was found to be in possession of another person’s EBT card, Xanax, Oxycodone, and two glass pipes used to smoke crystal methamphetamine.”
Wilt was charged with second-degree hindering prosecution and apprehension, false statement/misrepresentation to receive benefits over $100, first-degree possession of a controlled substance (second offense), and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Andrew Burkhart and Crystal Wilt were lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
The investigation is continuing and additional arrests are expected.
Sergeant Brett Reeves, Deputy Craig Sutton, Detective Jason Back, Detective James Sizemore, Cpl. Jack Caudill and Deputy John Inman assisted in the investigation.
