Laurel County officials warn about jury duty scam

Laurel County officials are warning the public about a telephone scam regarding not appearing for jury duty, which is circulating locally.

“There are no warrants on anyone at this time for missing grand jury or jury service. Please be aware that there is a scam going on right now where someone is putting themselves out as the Laurel County Sheriff’s office and taking money on what they are calling a Failure to Appear for missing some form of jury service,” Laurel County Commonwealth’s Attorney Jackie Steele said in a release.

Steele added that he had received a couple of calls Monday and sometimes the caller is saying grand jury and other times they just say jury service, Steele wrote.

“Never share personal or banking information with anyone over the phone,” he added.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root noted that the scam phone call is listing the number (606) 401-2949 and indicates that if you press two, you can talk to a Lt. Daniels.

“This is not the sheriff’s office phone number, and the sheriff’s office does not have a Lt. Daniels. This is a scam call. Do not send money! Disregard the phone call!” Root wrote in the release.
