Grain silo catches fire Thursday

Firefighters from eight departments worked for more than seven hours to extinguish a fire in a grain silo in Canadatown Thursday night.

Numerous fire departments responded to this silo fire Thursday.

Woodbine and Oak Grove firefighters were called to the scene at 5716 Redbird Road at approximately 5:25 p.m.

Woodbine Battalion Chief Rickie Fore said smoke was pouring from the structure filled with grain.

Woodbine firefighters used the department’s ladder truck to reach an opening near the top where it could spray water down onto the smoldering grain.

Oak Grove, Gold Bug, Emlyn, Patterson Creek, Pleasant View, Williamsburg and Pine Knot fire departments responded to calls for assistance as firefighters set up a tanker shuttle to provide water.

“We put about 60,000 gallons of water on it,” Fore said explaining that firefighters were working to keep the fire from spreading to two barns, a house and/or several nearby fields.

Firefighters were on scene until almost midnight.

“For the most part we saved it,” Fore said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Fore said the cause of the blaze is unknown.

However, there is no reason to suspect arson.

Whitley County EMS also responded to the scene.
