Grace on the Hill presents ‘The Gospel According to Mayberry’
Chapters and verses from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are memorable for the life lessons they provide and while those scriptures are regularly used, Grace on the Hill United Methodist Church is beginning a 13-week class session looking at another source of life lessons, “The Gospel According to Mayberry.”
Beginning Aug. 16, the class centered on life lessons the creators of the classic television series, “The Andy Griffith Show,” are attempting to teach, will kick off at the church on Cumberland Falls Hwy.
During the one-hour class, participants will watch an episode of the show and then answer questions and discuss scriptures that relate to the topic.
“A year ago there was a church down in Alabama that started it,” said Gus Clouse, Assistant to the Pastor at the church, and the person who will lead the class. “We did a Sunday School Class on this. We were trying to think of new classes and decided to bring it back for Wednesday night.”
Clouse said “The Andy Griffith Show” makes an ideal subject for such a class because nearly everyone has seen the show and has a favorite episode.
“It is a class that if you miss a week, you are ok,” Clouse said noting that each class is an independent lesson.
Clouse said it is also a good class for individuals who don’t know a lot about the Bible.
“It is a just a good class because there is not a lot pressure but you are learning a lot more than you would have thought,” Clouse said.
Clara Patterson, a church member, said the entire class is very relaxed and informal.
“We eat popcorn while we watch the show,” Patterson said. “We have a blast.”
Clouse emphasized that the class is not limited to church members and that anyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
“If we have to move to a bigger room, we would be glad to do so,” Clouse said adding that while the class is family-friendly, it is geared toward adults.
