Fourth annual Moonbow Eggfest set to take place in downtown Corbin Sept. 16

They are big. They are green. Cooks have been known to use them to prepare anything from breakfast to dessert.

The non-profit Moonbow Eggfest, Inc., in conjunction with the Corbin Tourism Commission will be hosting the fourth annual “Moonbow Eggfest” on September 16 to celebrate the Big Green Egg grill.

The cool thing about the Big Green Egg is you can do any type of cooking from baking to smoking,” said Corbin Tourism Director Maggy Kriebel. “You can basically do anything that you can do with your kitchen stove.”

Kriebel said 25 cooks have signed up to participate in the event, which will begin at 9 a.m. in the parking lot at the corner of Depot and Gordon Street with the lighting of the Eggs.

“With the helpers, we will have about 35 to 40 people participating,” Kriebel said.

Unlike traditional barbecue events, Kriebel said the participants are free to prepare whatever they choose.

“Each cook has a special recipe,” Kriebel said.

Visitors will have the opportunity to sample whichever creations appeal to them.

Kriebel explained that taster tickets would be available for purchase beginning at 9 a.m.

Adult tickets are $15 each or two for $25.

Various packages to permit families to participate in the taste are also available. For two adults and two children, the cost would be $40. For one adult and one child, the cost would be $20.

“As long as you have an adult paying, the cost for each additional child would be $5,” Kriebel explained.

Kriebel added that each cook is being asked to prepare 30 to 50 samples of each dish, so the earlier tasters arrive, the better opportunity they will have to try each of the dishes.

Kriebel said the cooks come from multiple states with several cooks making the trip from western Maryland.

“It is almost like people that enjoy Harley-Davidson motorcycles. There is a large following of people that love the Big Green Eggs enough to travel the country and set up at these events,” Kriebel explained.

Drinks will be available.

Pepsi products will be available for sale and the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce will have a “Spirit Garden” for those who would like to purchase beer or wine.

The tasting will continue until 3 p.m., at which time the Eggs will be shut down and permitted to cool.

Along with the cooks, celebrity chefs “Francine the Redneck Baker” and the duo “Chef and the Fatman” will be on hand for the event.

Kriebel said, Francine, who won America’s Baking Championship, is returning after making her inaugural appearance at the event in 2016.

Chef and the Fatman first came to the event in 2015.

In addition to tasting, the event will feature several classes.

At 11 a.m., “Eggin’ 101” will begin. The class will teach the novice everything you need to know to begin cooking on a Big Green Egg.

Recipes submitted by the cooks will be posted on the event website, www.moonboweggfest.com.

“It is just a really fun event,” Kriebel said.” We want to bring people into our area so they can show off their talent.”
