Fire destroys shed, damages home in Corbin Friday

An outbuilding was destroyed and a home on Old High Top Road was damaged by fire Friday afternoon.

Oak Grove firefighters were initially paged to the residence off of Dantley Drive about 3:45 in response to a report of a building fire.

Woodbine, Corbin and Keavy firefighters were later paged to the residence of Glida Morgan.

Morgan, who was home at the time, said she had been using a burn barrel near her shed to burn old check stubs, keeping an eye on it as she and her son, Nicholas prepared to hang Christmas decorations.

A neighbor knocked on the back door to tell them the shed was going up in flames.

Glida Morgan said the two-story building held her gardening and yard tools along with other assorted items.

Several neighbors attempted to help extinguish the blaze while awaiting the arrival of the fire department.

One member of the Oak Grove Fire Department who arrived prior to the pumper truck, used a garden hose in an attempt to douse the blaze.

Woodbine firefighters were paged for mutual aid. Following a second 911 call, Corbin firefighters were also paged and Keavy was called to bring tanker trucks to provide additional water.

In addition to destroying the building, the heat from the fire melted the siding on the back of the home.

After 45 years, the Keavy Fire Department announced in April that it would not longer cover the portion of its district located in Whitley County.

Oak Grove Fire Department took over responsibility for the area.

However, when Oak Grove is paged to that area, firefighters travel an indirect route to reach the scene.

In July, a meeting was held at Corbin City Hall over a proposal to annex Ky. 312 between the current limits and the Whitley/Laurel County line.

Even though it was reiterated that no private property would be annexed without the owner’s consent, residents in the area were vehemently opposed to the annexation.

Corbin City Manager Marlon Sams said later that in light of the overwhelming opposition, the city would not move forward.
