Corbin man indicted for assault in Laurel County

A Corbin man has been indicted for first-degree assault and other charges in connection with a December crash that left a passenger in his vehicle injured.

A Laurel County grand jury returned the indictment Friday charging Dewayne Doolin, 46, with first-degree assault, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of an accident, operating a motor vehicle while license is revoked or suspended, operating a motor vehicle without a license, failure to render aid, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and second-degree persistent felony offender stemming from a crash that occurred Dec. 30 on Ralley Road off of Ky. 363 in Keavy.

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene at approximately 9:40 a.m. in response to a report of a single-vehicle crash.

The woman, later identified as Karen Cottrell, was airlifted to the University of Kentucky.

Doolin reportedly fled the scene and was located a short time later at a nearby residence.

Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said deputies recovered a small amount of marijuana at the scene that appeared to have fallen out of the vehicle.

Deputies determined that Doolin was under the influence and he later admitted to them that he had been smoking marijuana.

The grand jury also returned the following indictments:

• Lloyd Wagner, 58, of Lily, receiving stolen firearm, first-degree persistent felony offender and first-degree possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
• Joshua Andrew Matthews, 29, of Corbin, first-degree possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.
• Kimberly Ann Cope, 38, of Corbin, flagrant non support.
