Corbin Lion’s Club auction begins next week

Corbin Lion’s Club member Jim Castle posts prices on the auction board during the auction in 2017.
The Corbin Lion’s Club annual auction will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of next week, and organizers plan to have hundreds of items available.
The event will be live streamed on Facebook each evening from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. It can be viewed on the Corbin Lion’s Club Facebook page.
All proceeds from the auction goes to help the club’s blindness prevention program.
“We buy eyeglasses for the needy, and sometimes we do an operation for cataracts or other things,” Corbin Lion’s Club President Mike Pawula said.
“Some people go to Louisville where they’ve got these fantastic machines … that can detect early on if there is a problem or not so it can be prevented.”
Pawula said he was aware of one child, a first-grader, whose eyesight was saved because of the charitable efforts of the club.
“They detected something in this little girl and said if they didn’t find it, she could have gone blind in about seven years.”
Lion’s Club members set up machines that scan for vision problems annually at the Kentucky State Fair. Pawula said the local club used to do something similar at the NIBROC Festival, and would like to do so again in the future.
Items on sale at the auction are diverse and, often, interesting.
“I sent at letter to Dolly Parton’s Stampede, in Pigeon Forge, a few weeks ago and just got word from them that they are providing tickets to their show for our auction,” Pawula said. “I thought that was pretty neat. We have all kinds of stuff, and I still have some tricks up my sleeve.”
Anyone interested in the auction can watch in live on Facebook and may make bids on items right on the live stream.
The auction is held at the Corbin High School media center annually. Auction winners will be instructed where and when they can pick up their items.
