UPDATE: KSP Trooper injured in three-car crash in Corbin Saturday

A Kentucky State Police Trooper, along with four other motorists, was injured in a three-car collision on US 25E in Corbin Saturday. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

The crash occurred at 4:11 p.m. at the intersection of US 25E (Cumberland Gap Parkway) and Ohler Road. The KSP Trooper’s cruiser and another car, a Ford Taurus, were both badly damaged in the crash. A third vehicle, a Ford Explorer pickup truck, was also lightly damaged in the accident.

Authorities at the scene would not identify the trooper or the other driver’s and passengers involved in the collision. An accident reconstructionist from KSP Post 10 in Harlan was en route to the scene to investigate.

Witnesses at the scene, however, identified the officer as KSP Trooper A.J. Bunch, and added it appeared he may have suffered a broken arm in the crash.

Trooper Shane Jacobs, public affairs officer at Post 10 in Harlan, confirmed Monday that the trooper was Sergeant Alfred Bunch.

Jacobs said Bunch, a 13-year veteran of the state police, was working in the area at the time. Bunch suffered a concussion, whiplash and multiple cuts and bruises. However, he is expected to return to work in approximately three weeks.

The drivers and passengers of the other two vehicles were also transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Jacobs said 80-year-old Billy Latham, of Sevierville, Tenn., was driving the Taurus.

A witness said it appears the driver of the Taurus may have misjudged a left turn onto Ohler Road off of US 25E and was struck in the side by the trooper, who was in the westbound lane.

“Latham said he thought he had time to safely make the turn,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs identifed the driver of the driver of the third vehilces as 61-year-old Billy Anderson of Williamsburg.

KSP Sgt. Danny Caudill is continuing the investigation. Caudill is being assisted by Master Trooper Michael Cornett and Trooper Kenny Sergent, who are both post level accident reconstructionists.

Troopers from Post 10 in Harlan, Post 11 in London, Corbin Police, Corbin Fire Department, Knox EMS and Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County all responded to the scene.
