2019 All-County Football Selections
Here are the News Journal’s All-County Most Valuable Player selections for the 2019 high school football season…
Overall All-County Most Valuable Player – Dalton Ponder, senior QB from Williamsburg
Ponder led the Yellow Jackets to ten wins and a district championship his senior season. He finished with an astounding 3,739 passing yards that included 48 touchdowns, and was the team’s leading rusher with 593 yards and 13 TDs.
First Team Quarterback – Cameron Combs, freshman from Corbin
Combs led the Hounds to six wins his first season under center, passing for 1,876 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also rushed for 302 yards and seven scores.
Second Team Quarterback – Seth Mills, sophomore from Whitley Co
Mills led the Colonels to an eight-win season, passing for 1,712 yards and 16 touchdowns. He rushed for 420 yards, including five TDs.
First Team Running Back – Nick Yeager, senior from Corbin
Yeager was the workhorse for the Redhounds in 2019, rushing for 895 yards and a dozen touchdowns on the year.
Second Team Running Back – Woody Lawson, junior from Whitley Co
Lawson was a key component of the triple threat backfield for the Colonels that also included quarterback Seth Mills, and fellow running back Zach Saylor. Lawson rushed for 978 yards and five TDs on the year.
Running Back Honorable Mention – Anthony Snell, senior from Williamsburg
Snell finished his senior season with 544 yards rushing and seven touchdowns.
First Team Wide Receiver – Caleb Rose, senior from Williamsburg
Rose led an uber-talented Yellow Jacket receiving corps this season, catching passes for 1,430 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Second Team Wide Receiver – Gavon Thomas, junior from Williamsburg
Thomas was not far behind Rose this season, finishing the year with 1,177 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns.
Wide Receiver Honorable Mention – Jacob Steely, senior from Corbin
Steely’s 778 receiving yards and seven TDs put him just above the following players who were also being considered for Honorable Mention status: Devonte Powell, senior from Williamsburg (596 yards, nine TDs), Dakota Patterson, freshman from Corbin (565 yards, five TDs) and Caleb Irwin, senior from Whitley Co (508 yards, five TDs)
All-County Defensive Co-MVPs – Colton Bargo, senior DT from Whitley Co and Ben Hollis, senior DE from Whitley Co
All-County Defensive MVP Runner-Up – Chris Howard, sophomore LB from Williamsburg
All-County Defensive Honorable Mentions – Austin Lewis, junior LB from Corbin and Barrett Hollis, senior LB from Whitley Co
First Team Offensive Line Unit – Williamsburg Yellow Jackets
Second Team Offensive Line Unit – Corbin Redhounds
Offensive Line Unit Honorable Mention – Whitley County Colonels
Special Teams MVP – Jacob Baker, freshman kicker from Corbin
Special Teams MVP Runner-Up – Jayden Watson, senior kicker from Whitley Co
Special Teams Honorable Mention – Sydney Bowen, freshman kicker from Williamsburg
First Team All-Purpose – Zach Saylor, junior from Whitley Co
Saylor was the Colonel’s second-leading rusher in 2019 with 424 yards and eleven touchdowns. He also caught two touchdown passes on the season, and he was the team’s leading tackler on defense.
Second Team All-Purpose – Ethan Wine, senior from Corbin
Wine was once again a key component of the Redhound defense this year, and he also contributed to several big plays on offense as a receiver. Unfortunately, he was forced to miss some time due to injury this fall.
All-Purpose Honorable Mention – Treyveon Longmire, sophomore from Corbin
Longmire ran for over 500 yards and five touchdowns in his sophomore campaign. He also caught passes for 167 yards and one score, and was a regular contributor on defense.
