Mullis accused of shooting towards kids
A Williamsburg man is being held behind bars after allegedly firing a shotgun in the direction of five children Sunday afternoon.
About 3:30 p.m., Williamsburg Police Sgt. Brandon White and K-9 Officer Elijah Hunter responded to a shots fire complaint in the Brush Arbor community.
When officers arrived at Brush Arbor Apartments, several residents told police that Cody C. Mullis, 25, was allegedly drunk behind apartment 694 shooting a shotgun in the direction of five small children, who were on the playground behind the apartment, according a police release and the arrest citation.
Officers went to Mullis’ apartment to speak with him and he appeared to be intoxicated, according to his arrest citation.
When asked about the shooting, Mullis allegedly became irate and started yelling and cursing, Hunter wrote on the arrest citation.
In a trash can behind Mullis apartment, police found six spent 12-gauge shotgun shells. Police found a 12-guage shotgun hidden under a tarp in the kitchen, the citation stated.
“There were five small children playing in the woods behind the apartment where he was shooting the gun,” Hunter wrote on the arrest citation.
When Mullis was taken into custody, he allegedly started trying to pull away from officers and started head-butting White’s patrol car putting a dent in the car above the driver’s side rear door, the citation stated.
When placed in the car, Mullis allegedly started kicking the door and windows of the car, according to his citation.
Mullis was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center on charges of first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Mullis pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Monday afternoon before Whitley District Judge Cathy Prewitt.
Prewitt appointed the public advocate’s office to represent Mullis, scheduled an April 4 preliminary hearing in his case and left his bond at $10,000 cash. If Mullis posts bond, he will be required to wear an ankle-monitoring device.
A Williamsburg Police Department release and the arrest citation indicate that Hunter intended to charge Mullis with five counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.
