Woodbine man arrested in connection with shooting near Knox-Whitley line
A Woodbine man has been charged with assault in connection with a shooting Wednesday outside his home.
According to Kentucky State Police, 86-year-old Fred Meyer, allegedly shot Chris Dinkins, 50, of Corbin, in the face with a hand gun just before 5 p.m. Dinkins was sitting in his vehicle in the driveway of Meyer’s home on Prewitt Road, off of Dowis Chapel Road near the Knox-Whitley County line.
The two men had reportedly been arguing prior to the shooting.
"We just know an argument took place," said Trooper Shane Jacobs, public affairs officer at Post 10 in Harlan, when asked what the men were arguing about.
Jacobs added Dinkins’ wife was the live-in caretaker for Meyer.
Meyer was reportedly standing on the porch of his home. Jacobs estimated the shot was from a distance of approximately 15 yards and passed through the open driver’s side window of Dinkins’ vehicle.
Investigators declined to release further details concerning the caliber of the gun and whether it was a revolver or a semi-automatic.
Dinkins’ 16-year-old son was in the vehicle with him as well, but he was unharmed.
Police took Meyers into custody for questioning and then charged him with first-degree assault. He is being held without bond in the Knox County Detention Center
Dinkins was taken by ambulance to Baptist Health Corbin and then airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he was intially listed in criticial condition. Officials at UK said Thursday that he has been upgraded to serious condition.
