Woman gives birth in car outside Baptist ER with assistance from husband, hospital security guard

A Corbin area woman gave birth with the help of her husband and a hospital security guard when she was unable to reach Baptist Health Corbin in time Sunday.

Kendra Bain gave birth to her son, Wolfgang, within an hour of going into labor Sunday. The birth occurred in the car outside the Baptist Health Corbin Emergency Room. Wolfgang refused to wait to get to the hospital before making his debut. Bain said she couldn’t have done it without her husband, Jerry Lawson, and hospital security guard Paul Buchanan.

Kendra Bain gave birth to 7 pound, 14 ounce Wolfgang at 12:55 p.m., which she said was 15 minutes after she and her husband, Jerry Lawson, left their home off of Master Street.

“It all happened within an hour,” Bain said. “I was home serving breakfast when the labor started. I thought I had plenty of time to get to the hospital, but I never dreamed it would be that fast.”

Bain said that by the time they arrived at the hospital emergency room, the baby was just seconds from making his debut in the world.

“There was no stopping him,” Bain said adding that by that point, there was no time to move her to the ER.

Bain said security guard Paul Buchanan, along with Lawson, were instrumental in a successful birth.

“He was a very big help,” she said of Buchanan.

Bain added that it was her husband who remained calm from the time they left the house and continued to do so as the birth grew closer.

“I was kind of freaking out, so if it wasn’t for Jerry, I wouldn’t have known what to do,” Bain said.
