Woman allegedly kicks boyfriend as he lay bleeding along roadway
A Whitley district judge will decide next month whether a grand jury should hear evidence that a Corbin woman allegedly kicked her boyfriend while he was lying on the ground bleeding after jumping out of their vehicle last week.
Kenda Champlin, 32, of Corbin pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault during her arraignment Thursday afternoon before District Judge Dan Ballou, who scheduled a Feb. 5 preliminary hearing in the case.
Williamsburg Police Officer Bobby Freeman said that in his 13 years in law enforcement, he has never run across another situation quite like this.
“It was crazy,” he said.
About 5:45 p.m. on Jan. 17, Williamsburg police received a call notifying them that a pedestrian had been struck by a black 2001 Kia van in front of Walmart on Ky. 92W.
Freeman, who is the investigating officer in the case, said police later learned that the Isaac Shawn Grubb, 19, wasn’t actually a pedestrian, but had allegedly jumped out of the vehicle driven by his girlfriend, Champlin.
The couple, who lived together at 1001 Circle Drive, had recently purchased the vehicle together, and it was in both their names, Freeman noted.
“Apparently they had been having an argument in the vehicle coming from Corbin,” Freeman said. “Witnesses said that as they got off the interstate, the passengers door was open.”
Freeman said Champlin told police that Grubb jumped out of the vehicle, but a witness stated Champlin hit Grubb with the vehicle, circled around the Tobacco Barn and then stopped in front of Grubb.
“When Champlin got out of the vehicle, we have several witnesses, who stated she got out of the vehicle, ran up to him, and was kicking him and cursing at him,” Freeman said.
The argument was apparently part of a domestic dispute. Champlin was allegedly kicking Grubb in the back, Freeman said.
“She was upset about something, and apparently he wanted to get out of the vehicle,” Freeman said.
Champlin told police Grubb jumped out of the vehicle, and Grubb told police he didn’t remember what happened, Freeman said.
Grubb was flown by helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with a head injury.
Williamsburg Assistant Police Chief Rick Mosley and Officer Kenny Shaw assisted with the investigation.
