Four interceptions and two fumbles proved costly as the Whitley County Colonels lost to North Hardin in the Joe Jaggers Classic Saturday night, 40-6.
The Colonels looked impressive in the opening period, hanging with the Trojans. North Hardin scored first when senior quarterback Andre Autrey connected with junior Maurice Gosa on a 16 yard pass with 5:23 in the opening opening period. Senior kicker, Johnivon added the point after for a 7-0 lead.
The Colonels came back and added a touchdown of their own when Cody Jeffries scored from four yards out. Whitley County missed the extra point and trailed 7-6 to end the first quarter.
The Trojans (2-0) went on a 33-0 rampage over the next 24 minutes, taking a 40-6 lead in the game.
The Trojan defense forced six turnovers. Austin Berry, a sophomore, intercepted a Jordan McCumbers pass at the nine yard line and ran it in for a touchdown in the second period. Junior Scott Swartz intercepted a pass and ran it back 18 yards in third period and Dion Bankston grabbed up a fumble in midair and went two yards for the final TD of the game.
After cutting the lead to one, North Hardin scored on a 16 yard touchdown by Mark Terry with 10:14 in the second quarter. The Trojans took the ball at the 30 yard line and drove it down the field in 11 plays for the 13-6 lead.
Berry then intercepted a McCumbers pass and scored less than a minute later for a 20-6 lead. Oggs boot through the uprights accounted for the 14-point lead.
The fourth North Hardin score was the result of a Colonel fumble late in the second quarter. Autrey hit Gosa on a 20 yard pass with :42 left in the half. Oggs pushed the lead out to 27-6 at the break.
The Trojans added two more scores in the third period to account for the final margin.
For the game, McCumbers hit on 13 of 30 passes with four interceptions for 161 yards. Kevin Walls led the Colonels with seven catches for 97 yards. Freshman Jamie Lebanion had three catches for 54 yards. Benji Campbell had two catches for nine yards while Justin Fuston had two grabs for eight yards and Jared Roaden had a catch for 11 yards. Senior Jonathan Bowman was two of seven in the game for 18 yards.
Autrey was 6 of 11 with one interception for 80 yards.
The Colonels will remain on the road. They will travel to Shelby County Friday to meet the Rockets at 7:30. Shelby County opened the season last week with a 56-28 loss to Louisville Central. Rocket quarterback Alex Matthews was 20 of 36 with one interception. He threw the ball for 281 yards and four touchdowns.
Joel Cochran led the Rockets with seven catches for 109 yards and a TD. Orrie Carter had four catches, two of which went for touchdowns. Isreal Chambers had a catch for a TD.
