Williamsburg School to close Tuesday as teachers plan to attend education rally in Frankfort

One local school district will be closed Tuesday as educators descend on Frankfort to advocate for education funding in the biennial state budget.

Williamsburg Superintendent Dr. Amon Couch announced Monday that the classes would be cancelled.

“About 40 of our teachers will be going,” Couch said adding that the school system has 60 teachers on staff.

“I can’t tell them not to go,” he said.

Couch said he had consulted with members of the school board prior to cancelling school.

Even with Tuesday’s absence, Couch said Williamsburg students are scheduled to get out of class for the summer on May 31.

Students will still have a week off for spring break, and May 28 off for Memorial Day.

In addition, the school system has one nontraditional instructional day remaining.

“We are in a good place considering the weather we have faced,” Couch said of the remaining school schedule.
