Williamsburg pulls off the SHOCKER
Williamsburg Coach Jim Rains has slowly been building a basketball team in Williamsburg. The Lady Jackets have gone three years without a district win…until Friday, January 2, 2009.
That’s when the Lady Jackets celebrated the unheard…they not only beat the South Laurel Lady Cardinals, but did it in outstanding fashion. The lead at least 95 percent of the game. South Laurel had a 5-2 lead before Cecily Sears and Whitley Rains scored on back-to-back baskets giving Williamsburg the lead, 6-5. The Lady Jackets led until the fourth quarter when South Laurel took a 36-35 lead.
Despite the pressure defense by South Laurel, Williamsburg held their cool and dribbled right through the defense. They were able to pick up some fouls and regained the lead when Burr hit one of two with six minutes left. If they had hit some of those foul shots, the margin would have been much bigger. They were 12 of 20 in the fourth quarter. It was big baskets by Burr, Hoffman, Cecily Sears and a three-pointer by Kristen Sears that gave Williamsburg a 52-42 lead.
They again held their composure when South Laurel came after the Lady Jackets with a full-court press. The Lady Cardinals cut the lead to seven but couldn’t get any closer. “I don’t know where this is going to put us in the district, but people are going to spend a little more time preparing for us,” he said.
The Lady Jackets will not have much time to enjoy this victory with Whitley County coming to town Monday night.
It has been a long time coming for Williamsburg and in some way you have to be happy to see the Lady Jackets pull off such a win over the largest school in the district. It was a victory for all the small schools in the state of Kentucky.
