Williamsburg police arrest Michigan homicide suspect
A Williamsburg man is fighting extradition back to Michigan on homicide related charges.
About 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Williamsburg Police Detective Wayne Bird charged Darrin A. Martin, 41, of Balltown Road, with being a fugitive from another state.
Martin is also wanted by the FBI for interstate flight to avoid prosecution, court records said.
Martin was scheduled to appear in Whitley District Court Monday as part of an extradition hearing, but he has requested an identity hearing. This means Michigan authorities will have to travel to Kentucky to testify that Martin is in fact the man wanted in Michigan, Bird said.
“If he still doesn’t waive extradition at that point, then they will have to get a governor’s warrant,” Bird said adding that if federal authorities take Martin into custody for interstate flight, they could bypass the extradition process.
Bird said his department received a tip Thursday afternoon from Kentucky State Police that Martin was wanted by Detroit police on a homicide.
“He also had a federal warrant for him for interstate flight to avoid prosecution,” Bird added.
He said Martin had been living in Williamsburg for about three years, and that Martin had been arrested for various misdemeanor charges.
A murder warrant against Martin was issued in Michigan on Aug. 6, but it wasn’t entered into the National Crime Information Computer (NCIC) until Sept. 26, 2006, Bird said.
“When we got the information, we knew right where to go,” Bird noted. “We went over and surrounded the trailer, and arrested him without incident.”
Williamsburg officials said they know little about the Michigan charges other than it allegedly occurred in November 2005.
Other officers participating in the investigation including KSP Trooper David Lassiter, Williamsburg Assistant Police Chief Rick Mosley, and Officers Shawn Jackson and Bobby Freeman.
