Williamsburg couple arrested after report of abused children
James and Tatum Canady were arrested Wednesday after Williamsburg Police allegedly found their children had been neglected and abused
Williamsburg Police Captain Eddie Cain said police began an investigation Wednesday night when officers on patrol in the area of RD Rains Road were flagged down by a resident who reported that James Canady had wrecked his vehicle nearby and then fled the scene.
While on the scene, several other residents told police they were concerned about the Canady’s children as they had not been fed since arriving home from school Wednesday and that one of the children had been assaulted.
"During the investigation, officers made contact with the children," Cain stated. "One child had a black eye and stated that on the way to school her father, James Canady had punched her in the face."
Cain stated the officers spoke with James and Tatum at the family’s home and that both appeared to be under the influence of alcohol/drugs
James Canady was charged with fourth-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and menacing.
Tatum Canady was charged with public intoxication and second-degree hindering prosecution or apprehension.
James Canady remains in the Whitley County Detention Center on a $2,500 cash bond.
Tatum Canady has been released on bond.
Officers contacted the Department of Social Services, which has opened an investigation of its own.

trueparent, the problem with “the system” is that the “parents” will promise to straighten up, maybe be ordered to take parenting classes, and then the children will be put back in the house with them where most likely the abuse will begin again. Look at statistics…too many children killed at the hands of their parents had previous contact with social services, many having been removed repeatedly from the parents, only to be given back to them and eventually killed. What burns my butt in those cases is that when the child is killed the judges and caseworkers always act surprised…like they never saw it coming.
These kids have been through so much! I’m so glad to see the system finally working for them!
I’ve never met any child that should be hit in the face. No child should have to live with that fear always in their minds. Dear God is there anyone that can help these children. God Bless the Children and keep them safe I pray.
Let some of the other prisoners in the jail punch him in the face and see if he likes it. Come on people…..if you don’t want your kids, quit having them or turn them over to the state…..don’t beat on em like punching bags……
