All ‘A’ Update: Williamsburg falls to Middlesboro in region finals
UPDATE: The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets (4-4) fell to visiting Middlesboro 15-3 Thursday evening in the championship game of this year’s 13th Region All “A” tournament.
Middlesboro took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Williamsburg was able to tie the game up at 3-3 after two runs were walked in and sophomore Hunter Brown knocked in another in the bottom of the inning.
Middlesboro loaded the bases in the top of the third, and would add eight more runs to the board to retake the lead, 11-3. They would extend their lead further in the fourth inning with four more runs, going on to win 15-3 in five innings.
Williamsburg is scheduled to play at McCreary Central Friday before traveling to Florida for Spring Break.
ORIGINAL: The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets baseball team improved to 4-3 on the season Wednesday night with their fourth win in a row – a 4-2 victory at Pineville that has qualified them for this year’s 13th Region All “A” championship game.
Junior Darrell Woods smacked a two-run homer in the top of the first inning at Pineville, giving the Jackets the early advantage. The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when Pineville was able to tie the game up with two runs of their own.
After seven innings the score remained knotted up at 2-2, forcing the game into an extra inning. It was in the top of the eighth that a sacrifice fly from Williamsburg’s Trey Hendrix scored Justin Murray to put the Jackets back on top, 3-2. They added another run a few minutes later when a Mason Manning hit brought home Clay Kysar. Pineville was unable to respond in the bottom of the inning, giving the visitors the two-run win.
The Yellow Jackets will now return home for the 2017 All “A” regional championship, to be contested at Briar Creek Park in Williamsburg Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. They will be facing Middlesboro (6-1) in the tournament finale. Check back here tomorrow night for more details.
