Wildcats hammered
The Somerset Briar Jumpers spotted the Lynn Camp Wildcats an 8-0 lead before winning at Lynn Camp Friday night, 42-8.
The loss proved fatal for the Wildcats as they will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2002.
Down 14-8 in the second frame, Lynn Camp coach David Mitchell felt a turnover that led to Somerset’s 21-8 lead hurt the Wildcats.
Lynn Camp came out firing behind running back Joe Roskopf and marched down the field on its first drive of the game. The Wildcats (3-6) went 66 yards on 21 plays and scored on a seven yard run by Roskopf. He added the extra point for an 8-0 lead.
The Jumpers didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard either. Somerset scored on its second play from scrimmage when all-state quarterback Ross Deaton hit John Cole on a 72 yard play into the end zone. The PAT pulled the visitors within one.
It was the same combination that got the second score for the Jumpers. Deaton hit Cole on a 12 yard pass as Somerset took the lead for good.
A turnover led to the third Somerset score. Kenny Hughes went in from nine yards out and after Polk put the ball through the uprights, the Jumpers had a 21-8 lead.
The Jumpers added 21 more points in the second half to claim their fourth district win of the season without a loss. Somerset has a showdown with Harlan this week for the top seed in the district.
It may not been his best night of the year, but Deaton hit on 7 of 16 passes for 148 yards against the Wildcats defense. Cole was on the receiving end of five passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
Roskopf led the Wildcats’ offense with 107 yards and one touchdown.
Lynn Camp will close out the season Friday night when they travel to Williamsburg to take on the Jackets.
