Whitley Sweep Jackets

The Whitley County Lady Colonels pulled away from the Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets in the final quarter to win at Williamsburg High School Tuesday night, 53-45.
The Lady Colonels eased out to a 9-8 lead in the first period but was outscored by the Lady Jackets in the second quarter, 12-9 and trailed the Lady Colonels, 20-18.
Williamsburg (1-3) maintained its lead early in the third quarter when Nicole Bryant and Kaitlin Faulkner scored back to back baskets at the start of the third stanza for a 22-18 lead.
Whitley County (4-1) kept inching away at the lead and used a full-court press to make a run late in the period.
Trailing, 30-25 after Jennifer Shelly hit a pair of free throws at the 3:04 mark, the Lady Colonels rallied. They outscored the Lady Jackets 10-3 in the final three minutes to take a 35-33 lead into the fourth quarter.
Junior Kayla Haynes got things started for the Lady Colonels with a rebound basket to cut the lead to three. A free throw by Samantha Daugherty and another basket by Hayes tied the game at 30-30.
Haynes would score again from close range and Puddie Hibbs hit one of two free throws. Stephanie McCullah extended the streak to 10-0 and the lead to 35-30 before Bryant hit a three point play with no time left on the clock.
The Lady Colonels took a 41-35 lead midway through the fourth and held on for the win.
Haynes led all scorers with 15 points while Bryant led Williamsburg with 12.

Colonels win 78-68
The Whitley County Colonels outshot the homestanding Williamsburg Yellow Jackets from the free throw line to claim their third straight victory of the young basketball season while the Jackets hit just 34 percent in losing back to back ballgames.
The Colonels led by senior Sammy Wilson’s 22 points hit 25 of 35 from the free throw line while the host Jackets hit 8 of 23 from the charity stripe.
Williamsburg connected better from the floor then it did from the line. The Jackets were 28 of 59 for 47.4 percent.
Even the battle of the boards went to Williamsburg in the loss. The Jackets pulled down 41 rebounds compared to the Colonels 31.
Whitley County held the lead most of the game but couldn’t pull away from the Jackets. In the opening quarter senior Jeremy Taylor gave the Colonels a six point lead (17-11) before John McRay, who led all scorers with 31 points, hit a three-pointer then went to the line for a possible three-point play. He missed the free throw that could have tied the game.
J.J. Morgan rallied the Colonels who led at the first stop 23-16.
The Colonels again tried to pull away in the fourth quarter when they took a 71-60 lead with 2:26 left, but a 6-0 run allowed Williamsburg to pull within five (71-66) on a Michael McRay basket. That was the closest the Jackets would get.
