Whitley deputies respond to complaint of people passed out in car, arrest two for trafficking drugs
A woman was found unresponsive last Tuesday after a tip led Deputy Jonas Saunders, with the assistance of Deputy James Fox, to three people who were passed out in the Friendly Mart parking lot in Woodbine around 9 p.m.
The phone-in tip to Whitley County E911 stated that two men and one woman appeared to be passed out in their gold Chevrolet Cavalier. When Deputy Saunders located the vehicle, the occupants were not alert.
The driver of the vehicle, Brian T. Smith, 34, of Russell Springs, and the male passenger, Harold Smith, 68, of Bimble were awakened and questioned.
The female passenger, who was located in the rear passenger area of the vehicle, could not be awakened and was transported by Whitley Co. EMS to Baptist Health Corbin.
During their investigation, the deputies also received information that two men had appeared to be selling drugs in the store’s parking lot.
Officials say that a search of the vehicle led deputies to find pills believed to be Xanax, along with other prescription drugs, including Suboxone films, in the center console.
After a search of the men, the driver, Brian Smith, also had a bag containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in one of his pockets. They also had $557 in cash in their possession.
Brian Smith was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle on a suspended or revoked license, third-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, third-degree possession of a controlled substance, trafficking in a legend drug, possession of marijuana and DUI.
Harold Smith was arrested and charged with third-degree possession of a controlled substance, third-degree trafficking in a controlled substance and public intoxication.
Both were lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
