Whitley County cancels school rest of week due to illness

Students in the Whitley County school district are getting an extended spring break because of illness.

Whitley County Superintendent Scott Paul said Tuesday afternoon that he has canceled classes for the remainder of the week due to about 15 percent of the students being absent Tuesday, and 50 staff members district wide.

This will bring Whitley County’s total number of days missed this year to 14. 10 of those days have been due to illness.

Paul said that the entire five-day spring break, which starts Monday, would remain intact.

The last day for students is now scheduled for Tuesday, May 30.

Williamsburg Independent Schools, which missed Thursday and Friday last week due to illness, is planning to ride it out through Friday, which is the last day of school before spring break starts, according to Williamsburg Superintendent Dr. Amon Couch.

Corbin Independent Schools Superintendent Dave Cox said that student attendance rates Monday were between 91 and 92 percent, and he is planning to continue school through the end of the week unless attendance significantly drops.

Corbin’s spring break also starts Monday.
