Whitley County BOE approves draft calendar for 2023-2024 school year
Opening day next school year in the Whitley County School District will be Aug. 9, 2023, and the closing day for students is projected to be May 10, 2024.

The Whitley County Board of Education presented the February Above and Beyond Award to Georgette Vanover, a fifth grade teacher at Whitley East Elementary School.
The draft calendar for the 2023-2024 school year will include a full week for Fall Break, which will run from Oct. 9-13, and a full week of Spring Break, which will run from April 1-5, 2024.
“It is very similar to this year,” noted Superintendent John Siler.
The Whitley County Board of Education approved the draft calendar during its recently monthly meeting.

Also, during the meeting, the board approved a memorandum of agreement with Somerset Community College for the 2023-2024 school year, which will allow students in certain trade classes, such as carpentry and electricity, to also get dual college credit.
“It is just another way for our kids to get ahead and for the parents to save some money,” Siler said.
In other business, the board:
- Authorized the seeking of bids for multiple items for the 2023-2024 school year. “I expect these bids to come in considerably higher than what we have had this school year,” Siler told the board noting that inflation is largely to blame.
- Presented the February Above and Beyond Award to Georgette Vanover, a fifth grade teacher at Whitley East Elementary School.
- Recognized board member Kenny Carr, who has achieved Level 2 certification as a board member.
- Approved the preliminary site-based decision making council allocations for the 2023-2024 school year at $100 per student enrolled at each school. This is the same amount that it has been the last several years.
- Awarded the 2023 mowing bid to Imperial Property Services LLC, which also won the bid the prior two years.
