WHITLEY CO. FALLS
The Whitley County Lady Colonels dropped a district contest to the South Laurel Lady Cardinals last week, 7-2.
Whitley County kept it close in the early going and coach David Halcomb was pleased with his team’s play. “I was pleased with the way our girls started the game,” he said. “We were ready to play. We jumped out first and got a run in the third inning, but missed a great opportunity to score a couple more in that inning.”
I felt we should have been up 3-0, but South Laurel’s right fielder made a nice play on a well-hit ball by LeeAnna Moses,” said Halcomb. “I thought our kids battled, but we made a couple errors that enabled them to keep innings going and we just can’t do that and expect to win, especially against a quality team like South Laurel.”
Whitley County scored the first run of the game in the top of the third when Ashley Lindsay opened the inning with a single. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Caitlyn Walden. She scored on a base hit by Simbree Sizemore. Jadon Dopel’s hit sent Sizemore to third, but Moses left her stranded after a fly ball to right field.
The Lady Cardinals responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and took the lead for good. Alexandria Miller tied the game in the inning with a home run then Fisher reached base on an error and later scored on a hit by Amber Hyde.
South Laurel scored twice in the fourth on runs by Casie Finley and Bailey Miller.
Whitley County cut the lead to two with a run in the top of the fifth inning, but could get no closer. Lindsay reached base on an infield error, stole second and third then scored on a passed ball.
“I like my team and I think we are going to be fine once my kids get more comfortable in their positions,” said Halcomb. “I’ve had to make several changes and we are still trying to hit on the right combination, we are getting close though. Right now it’s just hard to get any continuity going offensively or defensively because of the weather.”

Simbree Sizemore, who walked with one-out, was left stranded at third.
Bethany Powers and Leeanna Moses opened with back-to-back singles in the fifth, but failed to score and were left on the bases.
Whitley County again had the tying run in the top of the seventh when Moses led off the inning with a single. She worked her way to third base, but was left stranded when Lindsay pop out to end the game.
