Whitley Area Retired Teachers Assoc. (WARTA) recognizes members for their volunteer service

The Whitley Area Retired Teachers Association met June 15, 2017 at the Whitley County Extension Office.
Topics discussed included membership, health insurance, and legislative issues.

Members voted to continue their usual community service projects: school supplies, Feed KY Food Drive, and diaper drive where they provide newborn baby items to a local rehab center.

Certificates of Achievement were presented to two members:  Doris Moore and Verna Lee Bruce.  Doris was recognized as “Volunteer of the Year” for not only Whitley County, but the Upper Cumberland Retired Teachers Association as well.  Her volunteer activities center around the Corbin Community Backpack Program which she helped start almost 15 years ago.  This program provides weekend meals for more than 900 students in Corbin City, all of Whitley County Schools, and part of Knox County Schools through their Family Resource Centers.  She still serves on the board of directors as well as the day-to-day operations that make the program a success.

Verna Lee was recognized for more than 2200 hours of volunteer service during 2016, much of which involved visits to area nursing homes.  Her certificate reads in part “your volunteer spirit could serve as a model for other retired teachers to emulate.”

Both ladies were very humble in receiving their awards, crediting their faith in God as the motivating force that keeps them going.

The Whitley Area Retired Teachers Association is comprised of retired teachers from Corbin City, Whitley County, and Williamsburg Independent Schools districts. Their purpose is to keep retired teachers informed about their benefits as well as legislative activities that affect them both in Frankfort and Washington.

All retired teachers that are not already involved are invited and encouraged to join their local Association as well as the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.
