Whitfield gets 8-years in high-speed motorcycle pursuit case

A man, who led Kentucky State Police on a high-speed motorcycle chase through three counties in July, was sentenced to eight year in prison Monday afternoon.

Devan Whitfield was sentenced to eight years in prison Monday.

Devan Whitfield, 28, pleaded guilty to first-degree fleeing or evading police and failure to comply with sex offender registration on Oct. 9.

In exchange, prosecutors recommended that Whitfield serve four-year prison sentences on each count to be served consecutively, or one after the other, for a total sentence of eight years in prison.

Judge Dan Ballou also ordered Whitfield to pay a $140 in court costs once he is released from custody.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors also agreed to dismiss a second-degree persistent felony offender charge against Whitfield. On April 14, 2011, Whitfield was convicted of rape in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, according to his indictment.

According to the Idaho State Police Sex Offender Registry, Whitfield’s last verified address was in Spirit Lake, Idaho, in 2017. The registry lists his status as non-compliant.

On July 22, 2018, KSP Trooper Jeremy Elliotte attempted to conduct a traffic stop after observing Whitfield speeding and driving recklessly near Exit 25 at approximately 11:10 p.m., according to an arrest citation.

However, Whitfield would not stop and attempted to elude law enforcement.

The 30-mile chase, which went through three counties, reached speeds of up to 130 mph and ended at Exit 59 in Mt. Vernon when Whitfield wrecked.

Whitfield continued to resist as law enforcement, who attempted to secure him in handcuffs, according to his arrest citation.

Whitfield has been lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center since his arrest, according to the jail’s website.
