We’re 34-3

Take notice Kentucky! Can any other section of the state claim a 34-3 record in football. And to boot, all four Whitley County schools have won their respective class/conferenece championship.

First, there are the Corbin Redhounds, who finished the regular season as the Class 2A District 8 champions and will host the playoffs until they are beaten or advance to the state finals in Louisville. The Redhounds are led by senior quarterback Lance Freeman and running backs Caleb Watkins, Michael Campbell and Matthew Taylor. Senior receiver Corey Sewell has stepped up and hauled in two touchdowns in each of the last two wins.

The Whitley County Colonels have completely turned the season of ’07 around. The Colonels are 8-1 and will be shooting for their ninth win in a row Friday night when they play Rockcastle County. I expect that game to be a war between two mountain teams. The Colonels are led by seniors Jason Powers and Cody Jones. Powers was the man in the early season with nearly a 1,000 yards but as of late teams have been keying on the Colonels running back. That has open the holes for Jones, who has had over 200 yards in the last two games. And, Josh Wynn along with quarterback Jamie Lebanion gets plenty of yardage of the teams try and key on Powers and Jones.

The Colonels have a real shot at going a long way in the playoffs and should be the favorite to win the region over Mercer County come Thanksgiving.

Williamsburg is 8-1 and winners of Class A District 8. They will end the regular season with a win over the Pineville Mountain Lions before hosting Paris in the first-round of the playoffs. The Yellow Jackets got quite a running back when Ed Lawson came to Williamsburg this season. He has really opened the door for the Yellow Jackets offense. Junior quarterback Ryan Moses, one of the state’s best, has thrown for over 2,000 with several games to go. Aaron Brock is the state leader in receiving but teammates Dusty Brown and Daniel Pettit can catch the ball.

The big surprise is the Cumberlands Patriots. They are 8-1 going into a big game with UVA-Wise at Taylor Stadium Saturday. With the Patriots win over Campbellsville, coupled with the Union upset of Wise, UC can do no worse than a tie for the Mid-South Conference championship. If they win this game it will be the second year in a row, the Pats go to the NAIA playoffs.

That should put Whitley County on top as one of the best in the state, if not the best for 2008.
