Welding accident causes fire at storage facility

A spark from a welding torch is being blamed for a fire that damaged C&H Storage on Ky. 26 and destroyed the contents.
Firefighters were called to the scene across from Whitley Gardens about 3:30 p.m. to battle the fire sparked by a welding torch someone was using to cut bolts off pickup truck inside.
Firefighters from Three Points, Rockholds, Emelyn and Williamsburg City fire departments sent trucks, tankers and/or manpower to help extinguish the blaze.
It wasn’t just the heat from the building, which scorched and warped the metal wall that firefighters were battling. According to the National Weather Serivce, temperatures Tuesday afternoon reached the 90s with, leaving firefighters working to stay cool. Several firefighters fought the blaze without their helmets and turnout gear.
Firefighters used hooks to rip off sections of the metal walls in several places so they could get at the contents of the building, described as a hodgepodge of items.
"It is residential a commercial storage," one witness said when asked what was in the building.

im glad no one was hurt to
My husband has worked out of this building for the past 4 years. He has always been very careful when welding or torching. He was cutting some steel that he had propped up against the old pick up truck. Yes, the torch sparked a fire which he tried to put out but it was quickly out of control. We are sorry for anyone who lost stuff in the storage units behind the shop. It was an accident and we are very thankful that no one was hurt.
i was their putting it out and it was a pain to get it out trust me and yes we are lucky it wasn’t worse
I was commenting on what the article said. The last two sentences to be specific.
Y’all don’t even know what happened. He was cuttin bolts off a truck and the torch sparked. He tryed to put it out and it all came back. My 2 little step brothers got out in time. It was an accident, were all lucky that it wasn’t worse.
The business has two buildings, one mini storage and one larger building. The larger building was divided into one large area and four large storage units. The large area was leased to a machining company, which is where the fire started. So the building was not entirely used for storage, it was actually partially leased as a machining facility. Nobody was using a storage unit as a garage.
well duh! your absolutely right. Who in there right mind, does something like this. There are to many places in whitley co. that can be rented for a garage.
It’s a STORAGE UNIT!!!!! Not a garage. I used to manage storage areas and every time some one would try to use it as a personal garage. If I still was in the business, I would print this out as an example.
No matter how much money, IF the other renters were compensated, would cover the memories they’ve lost.
