WC to host concert, tournament
The Whitley County Lady Colonels will host the First Priority Softball Classic Friday and Saturday night. This year’s tournament has a different twist. There will be a concert Friday night for all the teams and fans, at no additional cost.
“I am really excited about our Lady Colonel First Priority/UNITE Softball Classic,” said Whitley County Coach David Halcomb. “I have wanted to put something like this together for a few years now…coincide a softball tourney with a community event.”
“This year we will have eight teams participate in our tourney and with the financial help of the Whitley County UNITE coalition, First Priority and several local churches, we are bringing in Seventh Day Slumber for a free concert after the games on Friday night,” said Halcomb.
“The event will be open to the pubic,” he said. “Seventh Day Slumber is a contemporary Christian band who has had several top hits. They have a great anti-drug program and I think it can have a positive influence on those in attendance.”
“This tournament will be very competitive as teams from various parts of the state will be participating,” Halcomb said. Teams from Bourbon County, Tates Creek, Harlan County, Harrison County, McCreary Central, Middlesboro and Cumberland County will be here to compete.
“As of now the weather forecast looks great with temps in the 80s.” said Halcomb. “So we should have a great weekend of softball.”
The tournament will get underway Friday night with pool play. Pool A features Whitley County, Bourbon County, Harlan County and Tates Creek. Williamsburg will play in a Friday night game against Harlan County.
Pool B includes Middlesboro, McCreary Central, Cumberland County and Harrison County.
The schedule is as follows: Friday at Whitley County High School, 6 p.m., Whitley County vs. Tates Creek, 7:30 Williamsburg vs. Harlan County. At the Whitley County Middle School, 6 p.m. Middlesboro vs. McCreary Central, 7:30 Harrison County vs. Cumberland County.
Saturday at Whitley County High School: 9 a.m. Whitley County vs. Bourbon County, 10:30 Harlan County vs. Tates Creek, 12:00 Whitley County vs. Harlan County, 1:30 Tates Creek vs. Bourbon County.
At Whitley County Middle School: 9 a.m. Harrison County vs. McCreary Central, 10:30 Middlesboro vs. Cumberland County, 12:00 Harrison County vs. Middlesboro, 1:30 McCreary Central vs. Cumberland County.
All eight teams will be seeded and placed in a single elimination tournament that is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at both locations. The tournament championship game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
“I just want to encourage everyone to come out to the field Friday evening and then stick around for a great performance by Seventh Day Slumber,” said Halcomb.
